One-Click Push Provisioning: Corporate Cards on Smartwatches

6 min read

Sparados has launched In-App Push Provisioning for Wearables. Corporate cardholders can now add their Sparados cards to Google Pay (Wear OS), Apple Pay (Apple Watch) and Garmin Pay on smartwatches with a single tap in the Sparados mobile app.

This article explains how the feature works, why card tokenization keeps wearable payments secure, and which teams gain the most from paying with a smartwatch.

Key Takeaways

  • What is new: Sparados cardholders can add any active physical or virtual corporate card to Apple Pay (Apple Watch), Google Pay (Wear OS) and Garmin Pay with one tap in the Sparados mobile app.

  • No manual setup: no typing the 16-digit card number, no SMS verification codes and no waiting for an administrator to approve the request.

  • Security by tokenization: the watch stores a device-specific token in its Secure Element, and every payment uses a single-use cryptogram. The real card number never reaches the device or the merchant.

  • Control stays with finance: limits and category rules apply to wearable payments, and a lost watch can be blocked in the Sparados panel without cancelling the card.

  • Built for mobile teams: field services, logistics, business travel and event crews can pay with a tap of the wrist.

What Is In-App Push Provisioning for Wearables?

Push provisioning is a way of adding a payment card to a digital wallet directly from the card issuer's app. Instead of the employee entering card details in the wallet, the Sparados app sends the card to the wallet as a secure token. With this release, the same one-tap flow now works for smartwatches, not only for phones.

Demand for hands-free payments at work keeps growing – we covered the shift in Modern Payment Methods: Smartwatches, Fitness Bands and Smartphones. For companies, the question is how to give employees that convenience without losing control over spending.

How Do Employees Add a Corporate Card to a Smartwatch?

Until now, adding a corporate card to a wearable took several manual steps. Employees opened the native wallet app, typed the 16-digit card number, waited for an SMS code or asked an administrator to approve the request.

Sparados integrates with card networks and tokenization services at API level, so the process now takes three steps:

  1. Open the Sparados app and select any active physical or virtual corporate card.

  2. Choose the wearable wallet: Apple Pay, Google Pay or Garmin Pay.

  3. Pay right away: the encrypted token is pushed to the watch's digital wallet and is ready for contactless payments – no manual entry and no extra confirmation steps.

The same push provisioning technology also lets cardholders add cards to phone wallets from a browser – see Google Web Push Provisioning in Practice.

How Does Card Tokenization Keep Smartwatch Payments Secure?

Illustration of payment card tokenization: a corporate card converted into a secure token stored on a smartwatch

The feature is built on payment card tokenization, an industry-standard method defined by EMVCo. Tokenization replaces sensitive card data – the card number (PAN), expiry date and CVV – with a unique digital identifier called a token. Card networks are moving in the same direction: read why in The End of the 16-Digit Card: Mastercard's Shift to Tokenization.

The Tokenization Cycle Step by Step

  • Device-bound token: when an employee adds a card to a smartwatch, the Token Service Provider (TSP) creates a token for that specific device. The token is stored in the watch's Secure Element – an isolated chip.

  • Single-use cryptogram: at checkout, the watch sends the token together with a one-time cryptogram to the payment terminal. The real card number is never stored on the watch or shown to the merchant.

  • Fast response to loss: if an employee loses the watch, an administrator can suspend or deactivate that device token in the Sparados panel. The corporate card stays active, and no new plastic card is needed.

Which Teams Benefit Most from Smartwatch Corporate Cards?

For consumers, paying with a watch is about convenience. For companies, it also reduces lost cards, speeds up purchases in the field and keeps every payment under the same spending rules. Four groups gain the most.

1. Construction, Field Services and Utilities

Field engineers, site supervisors and maintenance crews work in places where reaching for a wallet or phone is unsafe or slows the job down.

  • Hands-free payments: technicians buy urgent supplies, tools, fuel or parking with a tap of the wrist.

  • Budgets on demand: project managers can raise a card limit in Sparados, and the technician can add the card to the watch on site and finish the purchase without downtime.

2. Transport, Logistics and Delivery

Drivers need fast ways to pay for tolls, emergency repairs and fuel stops. If you are comparing options, see Fuel Cards vs Virtual Cards for Truck Fleets.

  • No lost plastic: without physical cards, there are fewer lost or stolen cards and no card sharing between drivers.

  • Category control: finance teams can limit tokenized cards to selected categories, for example fuel or vehicle maintenance.

3. Business Travel

Employees on the road move through airports, public transport and hotels, where speed and security matter. Our guide to business travel cards covers the wider travel expense process.

  • Quick payments on the go: travellers pay for transit or business meals with an Apple Watch or Wear OS watch, without carrying a wallet.

  • Emergency funding: when travel plans change, finance can issue a virtual card immediately, and the traveller adds it to the watch in seconds.

4. Events, Media and Production

Production crews and event managers make many small purchases during live shows and conferences.

Delegated budgets: temporary virtual cards can be assigned to assistants and added to their watches for catering or equipment rental, with each payment linked to the right project budget.
